Hold thou they cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
(“Abide with Me,” verse 5)
Scripture Connection: Psalm 22:28-29
Dominion belongs to the LORD, who rules over the nations. Indeed, all who sleep in the earth shall bow down in worship; all who go down to the dust, though they be dead,
shall kneel before the LORD.
Art Card Prompt:
The Psalm for this Sunday describes God’s eternal victory for all people, those who are still living (“the nations”) and those who have died (“all who sleep in the earth” and “all who go down to the dust”). The living and the dead all worship the one true God in unity.
The final verse of the hymn “Abide With Me” connects Jesus’ moment of death on the cross to our own personal moment of death. We can face the reality of death without fear. Instead, we hold before us the vision of eternal life in the heavenly realm that awaits all the faithful, thanks to our salvation through Christ.
As you create your art card this week, draw on your own hopeful vision of eternal life in God. How do you take comfort in God’s promise of eternal life? What colors or shapes come to mind when you imagine heaven?
